Family-Based Treatment for Anorexia Nervosa - Effectiveness and Experiences with the Introduction of the FBT Model

Anorexia nervosa is a serious mental disorder among adolescents. In 2018, Ahus implemented a structured family treatment as the primary approach for this patient group. This research project aims to investigate the experiences and effectiveness of this treatment model in both the short and long term. The findings will contribute to a better understanding of the impact and benefits of family-based treatment for anorexia nervosa.

This project aims to examine how the implementation of the Family Based Treatment (FBT) model for anorexia among adolescents has changed the experiences and outcomes of treatment.

The FBT model was implemented in child and adolescent mental health care (CAMHS) at Ahus in 2018. We seek to compare the treatment experiences and long-term outcomes of patients before and after the implementation. All adolescents who received anorexia treatment at Nedre Romerike CAMHS between 2015-2020 are invited to participate. Recruitment for the study is open from March 27, 2023, to October 31, 2024. Eligible participants will receive a letter after turning 16 to invite them to participate. If you believe you should have been contacted but haven't, please feel free to contact us.

Data on treatment outcomes will be extracted from patient records with participant consent, and participants will be followed up for 20 years after treatment completion through information obtained from public registries. Additionally, participants will complete a questionnaire about their treatment experiences when providing consent for the study.

This project is conducted in close collaboration with the user and family organization Rådgivning om Spiseforstyrrelser (ROS - nettros.no).

This project is funded by the Department of Child and Adolescent Mental Health (ABUP).
