Fragmin injections
This information is for patients who have received treatment at the Orthopaedic Clinic at Ahus.
Blood clotting is a complication that can occur when wearing a cast, while waiting for surgery or after a chirurgical procedure.
To prevent blood clots you will self-administer Fragmin injections, one each day. Follow the doctor’s order. The injections are ready to use.
Where and how to administer the injections?
- Start by cleaning your hands.
- The syringe contains a small air bubble. Do not attempt to press the bubble out before injecting the medicament because it can lead to loss of medicament and as a consequence reduced dose.
- Choose an injection site on your tummy and pinch a fold of skin between thumb and index finger.
- Insert the needle fully and firmly at 45-degree angle into the skin fold.
- Inject the dose slowly while still pinching the skin fold.
- Pull the needle slowly out.
- Do not rub the injection site. Some stinging is normal.
- Dispose the syringe in a closed container like a soda bottle, and tighten the cap. The container can be disposed as normal waste.
- Ask the pharmacy about disposal of unused medication.
