Wound treatment with PICO vacuum pump
This information is for patients who have received treatment at the Orthopaedic Clinic at Ahus.
You have got a vacuum pump attached to your wound, which can promote faster healing. The pump creates a negative pressure, which draws out excess fluid form the wound to the wound dressing.
The pump is disposable and will stop working after seven days. You will need to go back to the clinic for change of wound dressing after seven days.
Extra dressing changes
- The wound dressing needs to be changed before one week if the dressing is full or if the port from the wound dressing to the pump is clogged and the pump´s alarm goes off.
- The treatment with vacuum pump will be discontinued if the wound does not show signs of improvement after 1-2 weeks.
Shower
- You are allowed to shower, but the wound dressing and the pump must not be exposed to humidity.
- The pump can be disconnected from the wound dressing when showering, but it is important to make sure that water is not entering the tube.
Cleaning the pump
- The pump can be wiped with a damp cloth with soapy water.
- The PICO-pump is functioning when the green OK light flashes continuously. You can hear the pump when it maintains the vacuum. This is normal.
Please, contact your clinic if the pumps stop working.
